Now showing: "The Future in its Shell"

Artist Joy Fennell explores Afro-Surrealism and the beauty of Black women in a photo series with themes of nature, water, and the boundless realm of dreams.

In “The Future Inside Its Shell,” inspired by Zora Neale Hurston’s profound insight, “The present was an egg laid by the past that had the future inside its shell,” I delve into a world where Afro-Surrealism meets the natural beauty of Black women. This photo series, crafted with AI technology, is my canvas for exploring the themes of nature, water, and the boundless realm of dreams.

At the heart of this series is a message: Black folks are allowed to dream, to escape, and to write their own futures. Each image is a testament to this belief, portraying Black women not just as subjects but as storytellers and dreamers. They are depicted in harmonious union with nature – birds, flowing waters, and under open skies. These settings are more than just backdrops; they represent the vastness of possibilities, the freedom to imagine, and the space to create our own narratives.

The use of surreal elements in each portrait underscores the idea of boundless imagination. Here, reality is intertwined with fantasy, symbolizing the limitless potential of the mind. The women in these images are strong, graceful, and resilient, embodying the spirit of the African diaspora. Their expressions are thoughtful, hopeful, and reflective – each capturing a moment of introspection or a glimpse of a dream.

Through the use of vibrant yet subdued colors and rich textures, I’ve aimed to evoke a range of emotions, highlighting the depth and complexity of our dreams and aspirations. “The Future Inside Its Shell” is more than a collection of photographs; it’s a celebration of the right to dream, a reminder of our power to escape the confines of the present, and an invitation to shape our own futures. It is my homage to the enduring spirit and creativity of Black communities, a blend of art and technology, and a journey into the heart of Afro-Surrealism.
