Don’t Forget the Fifth Wall, Reminds Interior Designer Alvin Wayne

New York-based interior designer and Lumens Innovators Council member Alvin Wayne curates a decadent dining space saturated with rich, nature-sourced hues and a maximalist ceiling, where the Crown Major Chandelier by Nemo takes centerstage.

“People often forget the ceiling is the fifth wall,” shares Architectural Digest-, Apartment Therapy-, and Ebony Magazine-featured interior designer Alvin Wayne, “and that’s where you can play with a little bit of drama.”

In this luxurious dining space, Alvin used a decadent approach for the often-forgotten ceiling, by leaning into maximalist interior design principles of layering pattern, rich hues, and statement accessories. Oversized crown molding frames an upward view of a tone on tone organic patterned wallpaper and draws the eye towards the Crown Major Chandelier. The statement aluminum fixture by design duo Jehs + Laub for Nemo Lighting was inspired by the outline of snow crystals and is available at Lumens in a variety of hand-polished finishes.

“I think it’s important to always look up,” Alvin shares. “You might be a little surprised.”

A saturated color palette — olive and merlot — abstracted from nature’s luxe range of hues warms the space for memories as guests gather around the tulip-based modern icon, the Saarinen Oval Dining Table designed by celebrated architect Eero Saarinen.

“When you look at this room, there is movement, texture and depth. It’s gorgeous,” Alvin concludes.
